Reminder: Neogen Holiday Closure
Neogen Canada will be closed December 25 through January 1 over the Christmas holidays. Due to the holiday closure, samples received after December 11th will require additional processing time. Please account for up to 11 calendar days of additional turnaround time for any samples received at the lab after December 11th. Normal turnaround time is 21 calendar days.
Samples will not be delivered during the closure and will be held by the couriers and Canada Post until they re-open on January 2, 2024.
For more information on testing, visit www.cdnangus.ca/adding-value/dna-test-requests or visit the DNA portal to check the status of a test.
Passing of Past President Gary Latimer
Canadian Angus Association Past President (2012) Gary Latimer passed away on December 14. Our deepest sympathy is with Gary’s family and friends.
Fee Schedule Changes Effective January 1, 2024
At the October 2023 meeting, the Board of Directors approved changes to the fee schedule. Several changes were implemented immediately. The following fee schedule changes take effect on January 1, 2024:
- The Canadian Angus Association will continue to provide hair cards for DNA testing to members at no cost to prevent loose hair samples.
- The correction fee will be decreased to $0.
- The Export Package fee will be $75 regardless of the number of documents required. Previously, an export package with three or fewer items cost $50/animal and an export package with four or more items cost $75/animal.
- The fee for permanent typing increases to $20 per test. The Canadian Angus Association incurs this fee for permanent typing at the lab; this charge is a cost-recovery fee.
- The fee for Geneprob herd analysis will be decreased to $0.
- CAA will no longer offer Leptin testing or BVD testing.
- The Canadian Angus Performance Program (CAPP) member registration and transfer fee rates will be removed. The current non-CAPP-member registration and transfer fee rates will not change and will apply to all members.
- The annual Canadian Angus Performance Program membership fee of $25 will be removed.
- The $2 Canadian Angus Performance Program weaning weight submission fee will be removed.
The Board reviewed that membership fees have not increased since 2013 despite the Association facing annual inflation costs. Effective January 1, 2024, membership fees will increase as follows:
- Annual membership fee will increase to $175
- Young breeder membership fee will increase to $90
- Regional association membership fee will increase to $35
At this time, there are no planned changes to the lifetime membership activity fee or to the Canadian Junior Angus membership fee.

Olds College Technology Access Centre for Livestock Production Residual Feed Intake Testing
Each year, the Olds College Technology Access Centre for Livestock Production (TACLP) evaluates non-college animals during the feeding trial season through a variety of performance evaluations and research projects. These include ongoing residual feed intake (RFI) testing via Vytelle feeding systems, basic growth and feed conversion tests, and behavioural assessments.
This provides performance testing services for clients in order to determine feed efficiency to make genetic selections accordingly, and improve the overall efficiency of the Albertan (and Canadian) cow herd, thus reducing feed requirements and enteric methane emissions. This feed intake information will be included in the Canadian Angus Association’s genetic evaluations for feed efficiency (RADG EPD).

Canadian Cow-Calf Survey
The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) is asking all Canadian cow-calf producers to share insight into their on-farm management and production practices, which will help inform future beef research and extension strategies.
It will take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete the questions, which relate to 2023 calf crops, starting with breeding in Summer 2022 and ending with weaning in Fall 2023. Individuals’ identity and information will remain anonymous and in the strictest of confidence. Information will be pooled with other respondents before being published in aggregate.
January 9 is Farm Transition Appreciation Day
The next Farm Transition Appreciation Day (FTADay) is taking place on January 9, 2024. FTADay was created to encourage and celebrate the progress Canada’s farmers are making to secure the future of farming in Canada. The average Canadian farmer is 56 years old, and the median age is 58. FTADay is a groundswell movement to motivate farmers to start, restart and keep going with farm succession through inspirational stories shared on social media and live events.
Use #FTADay2024 to be part of the conversation on January 9th.
