2025 Commercial Angus Producer of the Year Awards

BC Angus Association is pleased to announce that based on the quality of nominees, the Angus Commercial Producer of the Year will be awarded to two operations for the 2025-26 fiscal period. Each year the BC Angus Association accepts nominations for this prestigious recognition. This award is given annually to nominated and selected British Columbia ranch operations that are deep rooted in history of the BC ranching landscape and have strong black or red Angus and Angus influence bloodlines in their cowherd and bull battery.

Congratulations are extended to:

BC Commercial 2

Phoenix Farms, Pete & Shauna Blaine of Bridesville, BC

Phoenix Farms operate a cow herd of approximately 250 commercial red angus mother cows combined with 40 purebred red angus cows which they AI to industry trait leading sires with the intent of raising some of their own herd bulls. “We love the calving ease and maternal traits of the Angus breed. We sell our calves locally. Through the feeding programs which our calves go to, we are able to get carcass data back. It is gratifying to see a high percentage of them grading AAA and Prime” say the Blaine’s.

BC Commercial 1

Diamond B Ranch, Kevin & Heather Brecknock of Horsefly, BC

The Brecknock’s operation consists of 100 + commercial black angus cows with black and red bulls purchased in BC. “We choose bulls with moderate frame, great feet, doing ability, good dispositions and calving ease” says Kevin. Brecknock’s retain all of their heifer calves each year, keeping the top end for replacements, while the others are feed and marketed locally for freezer beef. “When selling beef direct, our customers like the marbling and flavour of their beef using Angus genetics.”

The BC Angus Association congratulates these two commercial cattle operations for their dedication and commitment to the Angus breed.

On behalf of BC Angus Association,
Bob Miller – President

Alex was a charter member of the BC Angus Association and a life member of the Canadian Angus Association.  He raised Angus cattle for 50 years until he retired  in 1997. Alex was also a member of the Qualicum Beach Rotary Club who volunteered and served the organization long into retirement.  In retirement Alex and Lucille traveled extensively and spent much time walking with the Heart and Stroke Foundation walking club.

Thank you to John Appleby - The BC Angus Association and it’s members would like to thank John Appleby for his many years of dedicated service to the association and the Angus cattle industry in general throughout BC, as well as serving on the board of Directors.

John is a 40 + year member of the Canadian and BC Angus Associations.

For the past two years he has also served as CAA / BCAA Angus Ambassador.

John decided not to let his name stand for re-election as a director in 2024.
Thank you John.

In saying that BCAA is pleased to welcome Julie-Anne Puhallo of Kamloops to the board of directors for a minimum two year term.  Julie Anne resides in the Kamloops area where she is employed at BC Cattlemen’s office.

Julie-Anne Puhallo

Kamloops is my hometown where I grew up on a cow/calf operation north of the City and I still ranch with my son and dad at his place helping with whatever needs doing. My younger days were spent in Little Britches and High School Rodeo, playing fastball and being a part of the 4-H Program.

As a 3rd generation 4-H member I still support the program as a Leader as well as acting as a volunteer with the North Thompson Fall Fair. Understanding the importance of promoting and encouraging the role of youth in agriculture has also been a key factor in my role as the Vice Chair and Marketing Rep for the BC Agricultural Expo, now one of the biggest beef shows in the province.

I’m the Communications Manager and Editor of Beef in BC Magazine at BC Cattlemen’s which has been an extremely rewarding position working with BC’s ranching community. I’m very excited for the opportunity to further promote the beef industry and the Angus breed in a different role and look forward to working with the Association and its members.
