Completing the Membership Application

Canadian Angus Association Membership Application CAAFORM1 has four parts. New members must fill out the entire form, but please note that Part 4 (Canadian Angus Performance Program Application) is optional.

Part 1 Instructions

Part 2: Membership Signing Authority Designation Instructions

Part 3: Application for Tattoo Letters and Herd Name Instructions

Part 4: Canadian Angus Performance Program Instructions

  1. Check whether you are applying for annual membership for an individual, partnership or company or for a Junior membership. If applying for a Junior Membership, please provide your date of birth.

  2. You may already have a commercial member account if you’ve purchased a registered animal in the past. To avoid future difficulties, it is best to have this commercial account upgraded to a member account instead of opening a new one. Please mention any other account numbers you may have (listed on your registration certificates) when you apply for membership. You may even have more than one account if you’ve purchased animals under different names (e.g. your name and your farm name). If you have registration certificates with different account numbers, please return them to our office (corrected ones will be returned to you) so that we can consolidate your accounts and put all your animals under your member account.

  3. If registrations are to be issued in the name of the individual person, the membership should be in the name of the individual; if they are to be issued in the name of a farm or ranch, the membership should be in the exact name of the farm or ranch; if they are to be issued in the name of a partnership, the membership should be in the exact name of the partnership; if they are to be issued in the name of a company, then the membership should be in the exact name of the company. If two or more members of the Canadian Angus Association wish to own cattle jointly, they are required to take out a partnership membership. The partnership would thus be shown as the owner of the animal(s) on the registration certificate(s).

  4. Provide your contact information as indicated.

  5. Indicate whether you own Black Angus, Red Angus or both.

  6. You may choose to join the Canadian Angus Performance Program at this time. If you check yes, be sure to complete Part 4 of the application form. If you check no, you may choose to join at any time in the future.

  7. You have the option of printing a registration certificate right away or storing the registration electronically. A registration certificate that is electronically stored is available to be printed at any time, and there are no fees applied to either store it electronically or to have it printed upon request. Read more about electronic storage.

  8. Be sure to sign and date the bottom of the form before you submit it to the office.

  3. Please indicate three choices for tattoo letters. If all three sets are in use, we will contact you to discuss alternate choices.

Tattoo letters can be any combination of two, three or four letters. Neither numbers nor the letter Q can be used. Each unique combination is registered with the Association for the exclusive use of a member. A 1–4 digit herd number and the year letter must follow the combination of tattoo letters to uniquely identify each registered animal.

  4. Please indicate three choices for herd name if desired. If all three choices are in use, we will contact you to discuss alternate choices.

There are some restrictions on the words you can use in a herd name. Words such as FARM, RANCH, RED, ANGUS, LTD., and CORP. cannot be part of a herd name. The Association has the right to refuse any name (see Section C of the Constitution).

Herd names can be shared between members with permission (i.e. parents and children), unlike tattoo letters which cannot be shared. A herd name need only be applied for once and will stay with the member as long as (s)he is an active member of the Association. If a herd name is not used for seven years it may be reassigned.
