Affected calves are born with a large quantity of fluid retained between the body and the skin. This results in larger bodies that usually require birthing assistance. Affected calves are stillborn.

At the present time, the Canadian Angus Association does not recognize Pulmonary Hypoplasia as a genetic defect, but does monitor it as an inheritable defect. There are no suspected or confirmed cases in Canada.
