Genetic Defect Testing Assistance for Members

Geneprob Herd Analysis for Recessive Genes Available to Canadian Angus Members

The Canadian Angus Association is providing members with herd analysis reports that identify the probability of your animals carrying the genes for AM, NH and OS. The fee for a report is $15 if the report is provided electronically and $25 if a printed report is produced and mailed. The report will identify any animals that have been tested for the genes. In the example below AMC would mean that an animal has been tested for AM and found to be a carrier. All animals that have been tested and found to be free of AM would be designated AMF. Animals that have not been tested but do not have the occurrence of AM anywhere in their pedigrees, and therefore, do not have the probability of having inherited the gene will be labeled AMFU. This stands for AM Free Untested or AM Free derived by pedigree analysis. If an animal has AM in their pedigree the probability of it inheriting the gene will be calculated and the animal will have AMS% associated with it. A calf whose sire is AMC will display AMS 50%. The report will also provide a pedigree analysis on sire and dam of each animal.

Geneprob Report Legend:

AM = Arthrogryposis Multiplex

NH = Neuropathic Hydrocephalous

OS = Osteopetrosis

C = Tested Carrier

F = Tested Free

FU = Free Untested, derived from pedigree analysis

S% = Probability of having inherited the gene

DNA testing for these recessive genes is available from several accredited laboratories, including MMI Genomics, Pfizer Animal Genetics, Igenity, and AgriGenomics; and can be performed on hair, semen and blood samples. Members can contact Kajal at 1-888-571-3580 to arrange for testing. DNA test results are displayed by most Angus associations on their websites and on pedigree certificates using “C” for carrier animals and “F” for animals tested free of the defect.

Members can request a Geneprob analysis of their herd at anytime. Angus breeders have access to DNA tests validated on Angus animals only to ensure that potential buyers have complete confidence when buying Angus animals.
