Performance Program Deadline Extended to November 1

We understand that weaning and weighing calves before October 11 is difficult for many breeders. The Canadian Angus Association has worked very hard with the Associations that we cooperate with in genetic evaluations on your behalf to increase efficiencies. We are very pleased to inform you that we are able to extend the deadline for performance data to be included in the next National Cattle Evaluation to Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Our staff will do their best to still have the new EPDs available in early 2012 for sale catalogues and bull buying decisions.

Please contact the Registry Department as soon as possible if you do not yet have the 205 day worksheet for your Spring 2011 born calves. If you received a Missing Data – Herd Inventory listing for Spring 2011, please complete it and return it to us as soon as possible so we can generate the 205 day worksheet.

It is preferable that you mail the worksheet or submit your weights electronically or by HerdMaster to ensure accuracy.

If you are not going to have your calves weaned by November 1, please submit your 205 day weights as soon as you have weighed your calves – the weights will be used to calculate Interim EPDs for your calves until they can be evaluated in the next NCE (May 2012).

Refer to Breed Development pages 10–11 of the Breeder Handbook for assistance with completing the 205 day worksheet. If you have any questions about weaning weights, online submission, the Canadian Performance Program or EPDs, please contact Kajal at 1-888-571-3580 ext 227 or by email.

For a weaning weight:

  • Black calves must be between 120 and 280 days of age

  • Red calves must be between 130 and 280 days of age

The Canadian Angus Performance Program is based on Whole Herd Reporting. Please provide a weight for each calf on the worksheet, or a disposal code if the calf was removed from your herd before your weigh date. Missing data will result in delays with adjusted weight and EPD calculations.

Reporting 205-Day Weights Online

Submitting registration and weight information using the Canadian Angus Association's online system is easy and can save you time and money! You will also be able to access your performance report online. If you have not switched to online data submission, this is the best time to give it a try.

First, complete CAAFORM21 and return it to the office. You will receive log-in information from us. Second, log into the Authorized User section of the website and click on Online Transactions. Here you can create a new batch (either registration or weight type), from a prebuilt worksheet. The prebuilt worksheet will list your calves just like your paper worksheet does. You will be able to edit each record, enter the weight, weigh date and management group. If you get stuck, call Kajal at 1-888-571-3580 ext 227. Submitting data online is fast and easy. Give it a try – we're here to help!

New Feeder Calf Listing

The Canadian Angus Association has created a new free service that will be available on September 16 to help you market your Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tagged feeder calves. The Feeder Calf Listing will list upcoming lots of animals on offer by private sale, through an auction market or internet auction and will be distributed to anyone interested in purchasing Angus influenced calves. List with us and let buyers know when and where your Angus-tagged calves will be sold!

An e-mail will be distributed each Friday listing new groups of available cattle. A complete list will be maintained on the Canadian Angus Association website. To have your calves included, complete the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Feeder Calf Listing Information form and return it to the Association office. Please include as much information as possible, however; not including some information will not exclude you from participating. Listings will be posted online within one business day and included in the next weekly e-mail.

Registry Department Processing Times

The Registry Department is currently processing paperwork that was received about two weeks ago. This is not an unusual backlog for this time of year and means that our Association is doing well as members continue to register and transfer animals.

If you need paperwork completed quickly, ensure you mark RUSH on the outside of the envelope or cover page of your fax. Rush fees will apply. To allow us to accommodate your requests, please do not wait for the last minute to register your show animals or request paperwork. All Canadian Angus Association policies, including random parentage spot tests, apply to rush requests.

Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Fall Feeder Sales

Market your 2011 Angus tagged calves at any of the 169 Angus feature sales at 67 participating auction markets across Canada! We have two new sale locations this year, and two sales that will feature exclusively Angus-tagged cattle.

The sales are listed on our website and are listed individually on our events calendar. Listings on our events calendar can be exported to your Microsoft Outlook calendar, smart phone or PDA.

Even if you're not buying or selling cattle this fall, attend a sale to represent the Angus breed and meet customers. We will have field representatives at most sales this fall.

Tips from Breed Development

Weaning weights that are submitted to the Association must be measured using a scale. To calibrate your scale, have the same weight available each time that you use the scale. Test the scale with the reference weight to ensure that the scale does not need to be adjusted every time you use it.

Attention HerdMaster Users

Hello HerdMaster Users,

The National Cattle Evaluation was completed in August and therefore you each have a NCE_EPD.zip file in your download section on the Canadian Angus website. Update the EPDs for your entire herd by:

  1. Log onto the Canadian Angus website as an authorized user

  2. Click on the download file tab

  3. Click on the NCE_EPD.zip file and save it onto your computer

  4. Unzip the file on your computer. It should now be a NCE_EDP.dat file.

  5. As a common practice I recommend you back up your data before importing

  6. Click on Utilities/Import select EPD and select the NCE_EPD.dat file clicking OPEN

  7. Allow the import to complete

You will now have up-to-date EPDs on each animal. You can cross-check any animal with that on the Canadian Angus website.

If there anything you want to know about HerdMaster, please give me a call.
