Check our blog on Friday for a post about the World Angus Secretariat in Argentina.

Performance Program Deadline November 1

The deadline for the next National Cattle Evaluation is Tuesday, November 1, 2011.  If you need assistance obtaining worksheets, please contact the Registry Department.

It is preferable that you mail the worksheet or submit your weights electronically or by HerdMaster to ensure accuracy.

If you are not going to have your calves weaned by November 1, please submit your 205 day weights as soon as you have weighed your calves – the weights will be used to calculate Interim EPDs for your calves until they can be evaluated in the next NCE (May 2012).

Refer to Breed Development pages 10–11 of the Breeder Handbook for assistance with completing the 205 day worksheet. If you have any questions about weaning weights, online submission, the Canadian Performance Program or EPDs, please contact Kajal at 1-888-571-3580 ext 227 or by email.

The Canadian Angus Performance Program is based on Whole Herd Reporting. Please provide a weight for each calf on the worksheet, or a disposal code if the calf was removed from your herd before your weigh date. Missing data will result in delays with adjusted weight and EPD calculations.

Report 205-Day Weights Online

Submitting registration and weight information using the Canadian Angus Association's online system is easy and can save you time and money! You will also be able to access your performance report online. If you have not switched to online data submission, this is the best time to give it a try.

First, complete CAAFORM21 and return it to the office. You will receive log-in information from us. Second, log into the Authorized User section of the website and click on Online Transactions. Here you can create a new batch (either registration or weight type), from a prebuilt worksheet. The prebuilt worksheet will list your calves just like your paper worksheet does. You will be able to edit each record, enter the weight, weigh date and management group. If you get stuck, call Kajal at 1-888-571-3580 ext 227. Submitting data online is fast and easy. Give it a try – we're here to help!

If you can't make it to Red Roundup but need tags, order online.

Demand for Angus Tagged Cattle

The biggest benefit to using Angus tags is that there is a huge demand for Angus-tagged animals right now. Our participating beef programs cannot find enough cattle to meet their program needs. To help bring these two sides together, we launched the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Feeder Calf Listing in September. This free service lists upcoming lots of animals on offer and is distributed to anyone interested in purchasing Angus influenced calves. A complete list is maintained on the Canadian Angus Association website and new cattle listed are emailed to interested parties each Friday. To find out more information or to get your calves listed, please visit the website.

Gold Star Award Program

The Registry Department recognizes members who efficiently submit complete and legible paperwork or electronic records with a Gold Star.

Congratulations to Henry and Bernie Jungwirth of Cudworth, SK and Black Hawk Angus of Mather, MB who received a Gold Star in the last month.

Remember, it's easy to earn a Gold Star Award—simply complete your paperwork accurately and neatly and you will receive a token of our appreciation.

Website Tips

How to Manipulate and Print a Pedigree Using our Website and Animal Inquiry:
The Canadian Angus online herdbook is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Very seldom is there an interruption to the service. Using the animal inquiry search from our website, you can find an animal by its tattoo, registration number, or a combination of other search criteria. Once you have found the animal, you are able to access progeny records, pedigree information, EPD data, and even individual weight information.

Hint:  To print a pedigree on one page, use the print preview option. Using the options available for sizing will allow the information to print on 1 page rather than 2 pages if that is your preference.

Hint:  All available individual weight information including the animals’ individual birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight, as well as average weight information on progeny, are summarized on the performance data link.

Attention HerdMaster Users

Hello HerdMaster Users,

As you are all aware, October 31, 2011 will be my official last day of support for HerdMaster. After that date you will be able to obtain support direct from Saltbush by emailing them at support@saltbush.une.edu.au. Saltbush is also setting up a Skype Canadian telephone number so that you will also be able to contact them by phone. Their office hours are 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. MDT Sunday to Thursday. Your yearly support fees will be billed directly from Saltbush. Please give Saltbush the opportunity to meet your support needs.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank each of you for your support of the program and the confidence you have placed in me. HerdMaster is a great program and I hope you will stick with it for your livestock record needs.
