A-Tags are available in bags of 25 in either a cow size (3” x 4.5”) for $30/bag or calf size (2.5” x 3.875”) for $25/bag. The standard two piece dangle tag is still available. You can view all of our tag products in the catalogue. Tags can be ordered by sending the order form to the office, ordering online or by calling 1-888-571-3580. Whichever tags you order, please allow time for shipping. Shipping to some areas of Eastern Canada may take one week to 10 days. The next free EPD workshop will be on Friday, April 15 at 9:00 a.m. The EPD 101 workshop covers what EPDs are, how they are calculated, and how to use EPDs. The Paperwork workshop includes the paperwork that participants need to fill out and also covers how to read and use the evaluation reports that are given back to members. The workshops involve accessing slides online while participating in a conference call. Members with dial-up or no internet service can access the slides beforehand and can simply call in to the conference call. The workshops are interactive and breeders will have to opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. To register, email Kajal or call 1-888-571-3580. Registration Incentives—Save Money A new fee schedule took effect on January 1. If you submit your 2011-born calf registrations before they are 4 months old, the cost is still $15 for each registration. If you submit the transfers for animals you have sold within 60 days of the sale date, the transfer fee is still $12. The fees to register older animals and transfer more than 60 days after the sale date have increased. Please click here to access a current fee schedule. The Canadian Angus Performance Program has become an increasingly robust genetic evaluation program that describes Angus genetics as accurately and completely as possible. A huge factor to doing so is receiving complete performance data from all members who participate on the program. Members should now have submitted all the inventory and weaning weight information for their Spring 2010 born calves. Any members who were missing information for their 2010 Spring born calves were sent their missing data worksheets in January. Members who still have not submitted all their data will now be suspended from the program and a $100 reinstatement fee will apply. EPDs are a great tool for breeders’ selection processes and they are requested by most commercial producers. Members must be enrolled in the Performance Program in order to receive EPDs for their animals. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580. There are a number of important deadlines that CJAA members should be aware of: April 29 Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador application deadline
May 10 US Exchange Program deadline
June 1 Showdown 2011 entry deadline
June 15 CJAA Scholarship application deadline
June 20 Showdown 2011 late entry deadline July 21-23 We would like to remind you that under the Animal Pedigree Act, bulls sold as purebred must be transferred into the name of the buyer within six months after the sale date. Only animals registered with the Canadian Angus Association can be sold as purebred—there is no such thing as a purebred without papers. The fee schedule has changed and the rate to transfer an animal more than 60 days after the sale has increased. We encourage you to complete the transfer within 60 days to keep your transfer costs low. Important Information about Tattooing Angus animals that are registered must be marked for identification with a permanent right ear tattoo that must match the tattoo on the registration certificate. The tattoo is a permanent mark that identifies the animal and consists of three parts: herd letters, herd number and year letter. Animals must be tattooed before the registration is applied for, and the Canadian Angus Association bylaws required the animal to be tattooed before it is 8 months old. When you are selling animals, check the tattoo before the new owner takes possession. Any deviations should be addressed before the animal changes hands. The same applies when you purchase animals; check the tattoo when you take possession and immediately notify the seller of any discrepancies. Any tattoo marks that are not legible should be dealt with as soon as possible. If there are any discrepancies between the registration certificate and the permanent tattoo mark, please let the Canadian Angus Association registry department know. For more information about tattooing, refer to pages Registry Information 2–4 of the breeder handbook. Get your weights in as soon as you take them. The information will still be fresh in your mind, and you will get your reports back in time to give you a chance to look over the data and make sure it is correct. When you are looking at your reports, make sure that we have recorded the calf’s weight, birth date, sex and management group correctly. It is much better to spot a mistake and have it changed before the data goes in to the National Cattle Evaluation. The deadline for inclusion in the next NCE is May 10, 2011. Performance data must be in the office by May 10 in order for it to be evaluated in the NCE. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580. Red and Black Baldy Fundraiser Assistant General Manager Michael Latimer and President Kirk Wildman have entered into a friendly competition to benefit the Canadian Angus Foundation and Kids with Cancer Society. Whoever raises the most money before the annual general meeting on June 11 will have their head shaved. Donations are being accepted online; please indicate if you are supporting Michael or Kirk in the comments section. All funds raised will be split between the two charities. Group Benefit Program for Canadian Angus Association Members The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to support a group insurance program for members and their families and dependents. For more information, visit the RanchPlan website. Hello HerdMaster Users, Calving season will be well underway. It is now time to get your calves entered if you have not already done so. The Canadian Angus Association board has once again approved a reduced rate for electronic registration of 2011 born calves at a cost of $15/calf until July 15. HerdMaster files qualify as electronic registration. I would like to remind you about whole herd reporting. In January you received an inventory file which has the dams for which you are expected to report calving activity or an appropriate fate code. You need to submit your fate codes for the dams that have no calf to report as a requirement of the performance program. Create a filter (based on fate and fate date) of those dams and submit an electronic dam inventory file. Have you received missing data reports in the mail? Make sure you report any outstanding required data to the office. When you generate your registration file, check the notification report for errors, correct the errors and regenerate the registration file. The notification report should be blank or you can account for the errors listed (i.e. – no sire registration number if you do not know the sire – you have requested a DNA kit) before submitting the registration report. The registration files are to be sent to herdmaster@cdnangus.ca Please print out a copy of the registration report that you want to submit and proof it. Have you requested the animals that you want to register? The hold certificate or electronic storage of certificate has been selected as desired? File the print out for your reference so that if there is a discrepancy you will have a copy of what was sent. Finally, once the registration file has been processed and you have met the requirements of whole herd reporting, you will receive an email that there is a file on the website for download and importing into your HerdMaster. This file will import the registration numbers into your data. VERY IMPORTANT FINAL STEP as this is your confirmation that you have completed the registration requirements and you need to get the registration numbers into your system. As always, don’t hesitate to call if you require assistance. Wendy Newton 403-668-5251
