Announcements
Despite extraordinarily wet conditions in many areas, the over 100 Canadian Angus Association members and industry representatives who gathered in Clear Lake, Manitoba, for the 105th annual general meeting were in good spirits. Chief Executive Officer Doug Fee reports a very successful meeting, with plenty of optimism over good cattle prices.
A full summary and photos are available on our website. 2010 annual reports were mailed to all members but may be delayed by the disruption in postal service. Electronic Registration Incentive The Board of Directors is once again offering an incentive for members who register their animals online or use HerdMaster. Submit your registrations online or via HerdMaster for Spring 2011-born calves on or before July 15, 2011, and the price will be $15 per calf regardless of age. To be set up as an authorized user, please complete form CAAFORM21-Electronic Registration Agreement and fax it to (403) 571-3599. To learn more about HerdMaster, the on-farm software program that is compatible with our registry, please contact HerdMaster Canada. The 2011 Gold Show dates are available on the Canadian Angus Association website. Please register your show animals early. If you must submit registrations on a rush basis, remember to include the rush request on your fax cover sheet or the outside of the envelope. Beat the Rush and Age Verify Now Beat the fall rush and submit your age verification requests now. It is mandatory to age verify your calves in Alberta and we encourage all Canadian producers to age verify their calves. There is no charge for this service but please be aware that we can only age verify Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tagged animals. Information must be submitted in writing and can be done as a calving season; please include the starting and ending tag number and the starting and ending date of calving (no more than 3 months apart). Or include a tag number and tattoo and sex of animal who bears that tag for age verification on an individual basis. Showdown 2011 takes place July 21–23 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The late entry deadline is June 20.
Producers wanted for Tag Readability Research Projects Agri-Traςabilité Québec (ATQ) is conducting research on tag readability. They need a number of producers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario to participate. There are two separate projects. One will look at HFX vs FDX technology and each tag's readability and the second is on reader technology. Each project will last for two years. To participate or for more information, email Cheryl. The Registry Department rewards members who submit complete and legible paperwork with a Gold Star Award. Electronic users are also eligible to receive a Gold Star Award. Congratulations to the following herds who received a Gold Star in the last month:
Please contact the Registry Department if you require assistance with your Canadian Angus paperwork. The Canadian Angus Association offers free electronic storage of registration certificates. A registration certificate that is electronically stored is available to be printed at any time, and there are no fees applied to either store it electronically or to have it printed upon request. When you are registering your Spring 2011-born calves, remember to provide Whole Herd Reporting if you are on the Performance Program. Ideally, after we have registered your 2011 born calves you will receive a 205 day worksheet. If you have missing data on your dam inventory, we will instead mail a “missing data – herd inventory” worksheet. Please watch the returned packages for missing data reports and RFI (request for information) sheets if we have any questions about a calf or calves. Stay up to date with new research—have a look at the Beef Improvement Federation proceedings available at: http://www.beefimprovement.org/PDFs/2011-BIF Proceedings 2011 final.pdf Semex 2nd Annual Beef Photo Contest Semex is looking for new and exciting beef photos to use in Semex promotions such as posters, brochures, catalogues, website and much more. Preference will be given to photographs that include cows and will be judged on composition, quality and character of image, suitability and/or creativity and overall impression of the photo. All entries must be received by September 30, 2011. Visit the Semex Beef website at www.semex.com/di/beef to enter and to access full contest rules, terms and conditions. Group Benefit Program for Canadian Angus Association Members The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to support a group insurance program for members and their families and dependents.
