Announcements In recent weeks, a number of items have been sent in the mail. Please check your mailbox for the following packages: 2011 membership renewal packages have been sent and should have been received by everyone except for those living in the province of Quebec. If you have not received your membership renewal, please contact us immediately. If you live in Quebec, your membership renewal should arrive by the end of January. A Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Tag Program brochure was sent to all members and commercial producers at the beginning of January. If you did not receive a copy, please let us know. Herd Inventories for spring 2011 were mailed on January 17. If you do not receive yours by the end of January, please contact us.
Revised Breeder Handbook Online Several Association policies and forms have changed and this has rendered our member handbook somewhat out of date. It has now been updated and we are getting it printed. In the meantime, it has been added to our website. Click here to view the handbook online. To request a printed copy of the handbook, please contact Tina by email (please include your membership ID) or at 1-888-571-3580. Producer Information Sessions in Alberta Alberta producers, come out to a night of information about the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Tag Program and the future of traceability in Canada. Have your questions answered through an interactive evening with Canadian Angus Association Staff. Orders for Angus tags will be taken or save the shipping charges and purchase them that evening (limited quantity available). Sessions will run from 7 pm – 9:30 pm. More details will be posted on the Canadian Angus Association website soon. Please contact Cheryl by email or at 1-888-571-3580 for more information and to RSVP. Information sessions are scheduled as follows:
Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Tag Program News New brochures for the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Tag Program have been mailed out with new order forms. Please use the new forms when placing your order. In addition to mail and courier delivery, we can ship your tags by bus if you prefer. Please let us know that you prefer bus shipping when you place your order. We are currently experiencing a high volume of calls for tag orders. We appreciate your patience at this busy time. Please keep in mind that you can also place your order by fax, mail or online. Canadian Angus Association staff will be on hand at the following venues:
Please stop by the Angus booth if you have any questions about the Angus tag program or to place your order. Limited quantities of tags will be available for pick up at each location. Attention Performance Program Members Canadian Angus Performance Program members who are still missing performance data on their 2010 spring calves should receive their missing data worksheets next week. The worksheets need to be completed and returned by March 1 to remain on the program. Please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580 if you have any questions or concerns. Registration Incentives—Save Money A new fee schedule took effect on January 1. Although some fees have increased, the cost to register calves under 4 months of age and to transfer within 60 days of sale have not changed. Take advantage of the lowest rates and submit your paperwork early. Spring 2011 born calves that are registered electronically will once again cost $15 per calf regardless of age PROVIDED the registration is submitted electronically by July 15, 2011. To be set up as an Authorized User and submit registrations online, complete CAAFORM21 Electronic Registration Agreement and submit it to the office. The Angus Marketplace (www.angusmarket.com) has undergone a complete overhaul. For only $25 per year, Canadian Angus Association members can join the brand-new producer database. It only takes a few minutes to sign up—just enter your contact information, an optional description of your operation, and choose the categories that describe you. Potential buyers will be able to find you by searching the database for the producers who can best meet their needs. If you have questions or need help signing up, please contact Julia by email or at 1-888-571-3580. Pedigree Extracts for Sale Catalogues The Canadian Angus Association can create pedigree extracts for breeders who are building sales catalogues. The extracts include the lot number, the animal registration number, tattoo, sex, date of birth, five-generation pedigree information, genetic defect test results, adjusted weights and ratios, and EPDs — providing potential customers with detailed, accurate information for each animal up for sale. The cost for the service at $2 per head is far outweighed by the savings in time and effort to breeders and typesetters. To order a pedigree extract, simply email Kajal the list of animals for sale including the lot numbers if known, the animals’ registration numbers and tattoo information. Photos can be added to the online herd book for an additional charge of $3 per head. Electronic Storage of Registration Certificates The Canadian Angus Association is now offering free electronic storage of registration certificates. If you don’t want to maintain a file of registration certificates and have experienced “paper shuffle syndrome”, then this electronic storage option will appeal to you. A registration certificate that is electronically stored is available to be printed at any time, and there are no fees applied to either store it electronically or to have it printed upon request. Additional information about electronic storage is included in your membership renewal package or click here to read more about electronic storage. Can you explain EPDs to your customers? Do you have questions about how to complete the worksheets or read the reports that you receive? There are EPD 101 and Performance Program Paperwork workshops available to all members at no cost. Simply contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580 to arrange for a suitable time to take a workshop. Canadian Angus Association Plush Herd Dispersal The Canadian Angus Association is having a complete dispersal of its Red and Black plush Angus herd. These cuddly little animals are great collectibles for the young or old Angus enthusiast. The black bulls have sold out but red bulls, and black and red heifers and calves are still available. These purebred plushies come with a Certificate of Authenticity with their own unique name, tattoo and birth date. Call Joanelle at 1-888-571-3580 to purchase your new herd addition today.
Bulls: $30 Red and Black Baldy Fundraiser Assistant General Manager Michael Latimer and President Kirk Wildman have entered into a friendly competition to benefit the Canadian Angus Foundation and Kids with Cancer Society. Whoever raises the most money before the annual general meeting on June 11 will have their head shaved. Donations are being accepted online; please indicate if you are supporting Michael or Kirk in the comments section. All funds raised will be split between the two charities. Group Benefit Program for Canadian Angus Association Members The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to support a group insurance program for members and their families and dependents. For more information, visit the RanchPlan website. Hello HerdMaster Users, Blowing snow and cold temperatures go away! Kind of tough to calve in these conditions but I guess it is January. What do we expect? For HerdMaster users, January means it is time to import your inventory file. You should soon receive an email that your inventory file is available for download on the CAA website. The Inventory file is confusing for most. This file contains ONLY THE DAMS for which you must report calving activity as a requirement for the performance program. This file must be issued every year because your 2009 replacement heifers will calve for the first time this year and if you have purchased any new animals and the transfers have been completed, their status needs to be changed to ON ASSOCIATION INVENTORY. If you have purchased any new animals make sure you add them (add animal) to your system – the minimum information required is tag number, sex and society ID (registration number) – before you import the inventory file or the dam will not be given inventory status. If you open the animal details screen you will see ON ANIMAL INVENTORY will be green if the dam is on your inventory. January also means Yearly Service fees for most of you. You should be receiving your yearly invoice over the next few weeks. I would like to welcome the new HerdMaster 4 users. This version was just recently released. If you would like more information on Version 4, please contact me. Happy HerdMastering, good luck calving and keep warm! Wendy Newton 403-668-5251
