New Deadline for CAPP

The deadline for submission of performance data to be included in the next National Cattle Evaluation has been changed to Sunday, October 10. If it is possible to wean and weigh your 2010 calves before October 10, please do so and submit your weights to the office by mail or online (please do not fax performance data). The weights must be received in the office by October 10 to be included in the next evaluation. Members are encouraged to also submit all yearling weights for 2009 calves before this date.

If you are not able to meet this deadline, please still wean and weigh your 2010 calves and submit the data as soon as possible. The data will be included in the Fall evaluation next year, and it will be used to calculate interim EPDs for your animals. Interim EPDs are more accurate than Parental Averages as they use parental EPD information and the calf’s performance information as well. Please do not forget to assign your animals into accurate management groups that reflect how the calves were raised. Calves that received different opportunities to grow or perform should be placed in separate management groups.

If you need a worksheet for your performance data, or have any questions about the Canadian Angus Performance Program please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580 extension 227.

Showing Animals at a Gold Show this Fall?

If you plan to show animals this fall that you have not yet registered, please contact the Registry department and start the registration process as soon as possible. We cannot make exceptions to our registration policies for Gold Show animals, so please ensure that you leave plenty of time for possible parentage spot tests, genetic defect testing requirements, and to provide missing information. All animals entered in Canadian Angus Association sponsored Gold Shows must be registered before the show.

You may want to mark your registration RUSH on the outside of your envelope or the cover page of your fax to ensure your animals will be registered in time for the show. Don't wait for the last minute to register your animals and risk not being able to participate!

In accordance with the Canadian Angus Association's Environmental Policy, the use of paint and colouring on animals in Association-sponsored shows is prohibited. The Board of Directors is responsible for checking all animals entering the show ring and refusing entry to any with paint or artificial colouring.

Age Verification Reminder

As an extra service to Angus tag customers, we will complete the age verification of your calves. Due to the large volume of requests at this time of year, please submit your information well before the date you intend to sell your calves to ensure we can accommodate you.

Identify your Angus-Tagged Cattle

The Canadian Angus Association offers a secondary method to identify your registered cattle. While a tattoo is required under our bylaws to permanently identify all registered Angus cattle, an easy way to cross reference the identity of your animals is to list their Canadian Angus Certification Program Tag number on their registration certificates. All CACP tags and Angus ATQ tags are eligible. Once animals are tagged, the data can be submitted to the office with the application for registration or at weaning if the certificates are held. Worksheets are available by contacting the office or an electronic template is available on our website. Older animals are also eligible for this service. You can submit the tag number on any animal originating on your premise and the papers will be updated the next time they are printed. Full confidentiality will be kept. These numbers do not appear on the Online Herdbook, only on the actual certificate of registration.

If the tag falls out once recorded on the certificate it can be easily updated. Simply return the certificate of registration with an explanation and the new tag number to the office and we will be able to issue you a corrected certificate free of charge.

For more information or to get started, contact Cheryl by email or at 1-888-571-3580 ext 238.

Tips from Breed Development

All EPDs have accuracy values assigned to them. Be sure to look at the accuracy of the EPD when you are using it as a selection tool. The higher the accuracy, the more reliable (closer to the animal’s true breeding value) the EPD is. P and P+ accuracies are good starts to describing an animal’s genetics but they are of least accuracy.

Please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580 extension 227 for more information.

How Long Have You Been Raising Angus?

The American Angus Hall of Fame is looking for Angus operations in North America that have been in continuous operation for 100 years or more. Does your family operation qualify or do you know someone who does? If so, please contact Michael Latimer at the Canadian Angus Association for more information.
