Announcements
You are invited to attend the Commercial Cattlemen's Beef on a Bun at Agribition on Friday, November 26. This event immediately follows the Commercial Cattle Show in the Stadium West at approximately 6:00 p.m. While you're at Agribition, stop by the Saskatchewan Angus booth and order your Angus tags for next year. Julia Lindsay will be on hand taking tag orders. Electronic Storage of Registration Certificates The Canadian Angus Association is taking a first step towards becoming more paperless by offering no-cost electronic storage of registration certificates. If you like to receive registration certificates when a yearling weight is on file for the animal, then this electronic storage option will be the natural preference for you. If you don’t want to maintain a file of registration certificates and have experienced “paper shuffle syndrome”, then this electronic storage option will appeal to you as well. A registration certificate that is electronically stored is available to be printed at any time, and there are no fees applied to either store it electronically or to have it printed upon request. Additional information about electronic storage will be included in your membership renewal package for 2011. Read more about electronic storage. Genetic Defect Testing at a Validated Canadian Lab The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to be able to use a Canadian lab, Quantum Genetics, for genetic defect testing. Please note that this is different from the lab at which we do our parentage verification. If you ordered a genetic defect test kit in the last few months and have not yet sent it to the lab, please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580 so that your samples can be redirected to the Canadian lab. To request a genetic defect test kit, please complete the request form and submit it to the office. For more information on genetic defects, please visit our website or contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580. Registration Incentives—Save Money Effective January 1, registration fees will increase. If you have older animals, register them before December 31 to save money.
There is also an incentive for electronic submission of Fall 2010 born calves. Registrations received electronically by December 15 for fall 2010 born calves will be priced at $15 per calf regardless of the animal's age. To be set up as an electronic user if you haven’t already done so, please complete CAAFORM21–Electronic Registration Agreement. Group Benefit Program for Canadian Angus Association Members The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to introduce a group insurance program for members and their families and dependents. Benefits are available immediately. For more information, visit the RanchPlan website. The Canadian Angus Performance Program is based on the principle of whole herd reporting which requires all calves to be weighed at weaning time regardless of whether they are registered or not. Please weigh your calves before you ship them as it will result in a better evaluation of the calves you decide to keep. If you were not able to make the deadline for inclusion into this National Cattle Evaluation please submit your weaning weights into the office as soon as possible. We will use the data to calculate Interim EPDs for you to use until the next evaluation. Contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580 if you have any questions. Have you Age Verified your Cattle Yet? All Angus tag customers can ask the Angus office to complete age verification on their behalf as a third-party service. Age verification can easily be done by cross referencing tags to tattoos or registration numbers. Due to the large volume of requests at this time of year, please submit your information well before the date you intend to sell your calves to ensure we can accommodate you. For further information, contact Cheryl by email or at 1-888-571-3580 extension 238. Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Sale Report In the words of Brian Good, October was "the best month I have seen since working for the Canadian Angus Association in the commercial sector." The new locations that are hosting Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Sales for the first time have been successful, with producers who are happy with the prices of the cattle they sold, buyers who are happy with the quality of animals that they purchased, and auctions that are happy with the success of their first Angus sales. Overall, prices have held steady throughout the fall. This includes the first two weeks of November. Angus tagged cattle topped the market at Burnt Lake Auction in October. Black Angus led at Swift Current. Very good Angus cattle brought excellent prices at Perlich Auction. Prices were also strong at Keady in Ontario. Mankota remains the only auction so far to host an all-Angus-tagged, all-age-verified sale. This year there were 2,700 head on offer and people came from all over Canada to attend. The prices topped all other sales so far this year. We have also received lots of praise in Quebec for the ATQ Angus tag program. Producers from other beef breeds have taken notice of the Angus tag and are very complimentary about the program. ATQ Angus tag sales have been brisk and we are very pleased with the uptake from Quebec producers. There has been strong interest in cattle shows from producers across Canada. The national show at Farmfair attracted a large crowd and we've heard from a number of producers who plan to take in the remaining Gold Shows. Brian also attended the first bull sale of the season and reports that commercial bred heifers are averaging $1,350 and bulls averaged $3,700. Congratulations to Show Winners The show season is winding down, with only one Canadian Angus Association Gold Show left. Congratulations to the recent winners at the Royal Winter Fair and Farmfair. Gold Show winners will be announced early in the new year.
As Canadian beef producers, the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) is asking Canadian Angus Association members to take a few minutes of their time to assist us in the evaluation of our current tag distribution system. CCIA is currently undertaking a review and study of the current tag distribution model. The objective is to understand ways to improve overall data integrity and also identify opportunities to enhance the supply chain efficiency of the animal identification program in Canada. As an important stakeholder within the process, CCIA would like your feedback on the current system and how it is working for you today. A survey has been developed to allow you to share your insight about the tag distribution system, which will help shape the outcome of this study and provide direction for the future. We, the Canadian Angus Association, are supportive of this project and encourage you as a member of our organization to participate. This is valuable opportunity to make sure your voice is heard and to influence the future direction of the animal identification tag distribution process in Canada. To access the survey please click on the link provided: www.surveymonkey.com/CCIA_Survey Alternatively, you can access this survey when you log into your CLTS account. If you have questions or concerns with this survey please email sberini@canadaid.ca. The deadline to complete the survey is December 1. On behalf of CCIA and the Canadian Angus Association leadership, we thank you in advance for your participation. EPDs will better describe the genetics of your animals if you record the correct management group information when submitting performance data. The only thing that management groups should reflect is how the calves were raised. The office will further separate the animals into contemporary groups based on sex, ET, twins, nurse codes, dam's age, etc. If you have any questions about management groups or the Canadian Angus Performance Program please contact Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580. Pedigree Extracts for Sale Catalogues The Canadian Angus Association can create pedigree extracts for breeders who are building sales catalogues. The extracts include the lot number, the animal registration number, tattoo, sex, date of birth, five-generation pedigree information, genetic defect test results, adjusted weights and ratios, and EPDs — providing potential customers with detailed, accurate information for each animal up for sale. The cost for the service at $2 per head is far outweighed by the saving in time and effort to breeders and typesetters. To order a pedigree extract, simply email Kajal the list of animals for sale including the lot numbers if known, the animals’ registration numbers and tattoo information. Photos can be added to the online herd book for an additional charge of $3 per head. Sponsor a Steak for a Returning Soldier Alert Agri continues to seek financial support in sponsoring a steak for a returning soldier and their loved one to show appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice these men and women have made. Click here for more information. Hello HerdMaster Users, November always brings the sales and this year we have seen the best prices in a long time. When you sell your calves, you need to fate the animals to make them inactive in your database. You also have the option to record the movement and sales information. If you purchase an animal, you need to add the animal to your database (minimum requirement — animal tag, sex and registration number [for purebred]). You also have the option to record the movement to your home location and the purchase information. The sales and purchase information can be printed out in report form which certainly comes in handy at tax time. When you record the movement, the current location is listed in the top right-hand corner of the animal details screen. If you need help with this, you can either give me a call or try the online training session listed below. Have you heard — there is a new version of HerdMaster called HerdMaster 4. I am pretty excited about the new management enhancements in Version 4. To find out more, give me a call or try the online demo listed below. Online training is a cost-effective method to reach out to the users. You do need high speed to access the training. There is no cost to the user for online training. Do you want to try an online session? Send me an email to register. Upcoming online sessions:
Do you have a special request for training? Please let me know. I am planning on attending Agribition from November 23 – 28. I will be around the barns. If I can be of any assistance with HerdMaster one-on-one, please let me know and we can set up a time to meet. Happy Herdmastering, Wendy Newton 403-668-5251
