We are Hiring an Archive Coordinator for the Summer

The Canadian Angus Foundation requires the services of a summer student to coordinate its archives. The position is at the Canadian Angus Association office in Calgary. The position is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs Program which requires the position be filled by a student between the ages of 15 and 30. The position is full time with minimal evening and weekend work required. The successful applicant must be able to perform some heavy lifting and physical work.

The successful applicant will be required to photograph, organize and document numerous historical items that have been graciously donated to the Canadian Angus Association. They will also develop a program for displaying and presenting the items to the public. There will be an opportunity to meet and work with Angus producers and Canadian Angus Foundation volunteers throughout the course of these duties. There will also be an opportunity to work with all levels of staff to gain insight into the operation of Canada's largest purebred beef organization.

Resumes must be submitted electronically by June 1 to Michael Latimer. The start date for this position is negotiable. We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Showing Angus this Summer?

Save money and stress—make sure the animals you plan to show this summer are registered well in advance of the deadline. Animals must be registered to participate in Canadian Angus Association Gold Shows. Last-minute requests cannot always be accommodated, especially if the animal is randomly selected for a parentage spot test. Registering early also means you won't have to pay rush fees. Click here for the Gold Show schedule. Remember: the younger the calves are when you register, the cheaper it is to register them.

Changes to Registration Fees

Effective January 1, 2011, some of the calf registration fees will change as per the February Board meeting. The good news is that after January 1, 2011, if animals are registered when they are under 4 months old, they will still cost only $15. It is a real incentive to get the paperwork in order while things are still fresh in your mind and records are still at your fingertips!

For the calendar year 2010, the fees remain the same. There is an incentive for electronic submission of Spring 2010 born calves. Registrations received electronically by July 15 for spring 2010 born calves will be priced at $15 per calf regardless of the age. To be set up as an electronic user if you haven’t already done so, please complete CAAFORM21–Electronic Registration Agreement.

Angus Tag Program: Did You Know?

  • The Angus Tag program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009.

  • Over 260,000 tags were sold last year.

  • 70% of those tags were sold between January 1 and May 15.

  • 84% of all tags sold were purchased by producers in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

  • Members purchased 41% of the total tags; the other 59% were sold to commercial producers.

  • 430 herds took advantage of the Canadian Angus Association’s free age verification service.

  • 152 CACP Feeder Calf Sales were held last fall at 65 auction marts across 7 provinces.

  • Currently there are 11 participating beef programs in Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed; 4 are retail partners and 7 are branded beef programs.

  • There are five ways to place a tag order: online, by mail, by fax, phoning the office or the automated tag order phone line.
*Stats are based on 2009 sales figures.

Get your Free Geneprob Analysis

You have until June 30, 2010 to get your Geneprob herd analysis report free of charge. Geneprob reports identify the probability of your animals carrying the genes for AM, NH, OS and MA. Click here for more information on Geneprob reports.

Genetic Defect Policy
As of January 1, 2010 calves that have known carriers of a genetic defect in the first two generations (parental and grandparental) of their pedigree, without an intervening free result, need to be tested free of the causative gene to be eligible for registration.

The Registry Department will send out an RFI (Request for Information) sheet on a calf that has a carrier within the first two generations. Please follow up with us to request a DNA kit for the genetic defect or to let us know if you do not wish to register the animal. A genetic defect test kit is $26 per defect. Testing is done using a hair sample through MMI Genomics laboratory in the United States.

Members of the Canadian Angus Association are required to report abnormalities in their herds. Click here for instructions on reporting calf abnormalities.

Mannosidosis Hair Test Available
Mannosidosis testing is now available using hair samples—please complete the genetic defect test request form to have an animal tested for MA. More information on MA is available on our website or by contacting Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580.

Sponsor Cowboy Carter's Team for Cystic Fibrosis

Each year at the end of May, the Hipkin family walks in the Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis. Darren and Stacey's son Carter has Cystic Fibrosis. The family has nearly reached their fundraising goal for 2010, and there is still time to donate. All credit card donations will receive an automatic e-receipt. You can help support Carter by making a secure online donation using your credit card. Your privacy is protected: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?SID=2503504

Have you Transferred the Papers to your Buyers?

We occasionally receive calls from bull buyers looking for transferred papers. Sometimes the animal they purchased, which has been identified by the seller as purebred Angus, isn’t registered. This is illegal under the Animal Pedigree Act.

If you are purchasing Angus animals, be sure to look for the registration number. You can use the registration number to look up the animal's pedigree on our website. Commercial producers require the registration certificate from purebred bulls, transferred into their name, to purchase Angus tags and qualify their cattle for Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed participating beef programs.

Please remember to transfer the papers promptly whenever you sell an Angus animal.

Tips from Breed Development

If you have a great cow but she has genes that you do not wish to pass on to future generations (a gene that causes genetic defects for example), one option is to use her as a recipient cow. Contact Kajal at 1-888-571-3580 if you have any questions about breed development.

Collect Hair Samples for Parentage Testing Any Time

  • If you are handling your animals, collect a hair sample using the recommended collection process, and store it in a clean unused envelope, clearly labelled with the tattoo of the animal. Collected samples can be stored in a cardboard box indefinitely. Do not freeze the samples; keep them dry and away from any moisture.

  • The animal's age doesn’t matter. You can collect hair samples from your newborn calves for future parentage testing needs.

  • Remember to always get the paperwork from us when you are DNA testing an animal at GenServe. Our paperwork should always accompany the hair sample.

Sponsor a Steak for a Returning Soldier

  • Alert Agri is seeking financial support in sponsoring a steak "for a returning soldier and their loved one” to show appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice these men and women have made. Click here for more information.
