Canadian Angus Performance Program Deadlines

We are looking forward to the fall National Cattle Evaluation results which are expected mid-July. Members who have not yet submitted their 2009 performance data will not receive new EPDs. If you think that you are missing data for 2009 please contact the office for a missing data worksheet and submit your 2009 data as soon as possible. There is a $100 fee to be reinstated on the program if you have been removed for non-compliance.

Performance herds should have their completed 2010 herd inventories returned to the office by July 15 to ensure we have enough time to process 205 day worksheets.

Please contact Kajal Devani have any questions or would like more information about the program.

Geneprob Analysis Free Until June 30

You have until June 30, 2010 to get your Geneprob herd analysis report free of charge. Geneprob reports identify the probability of your animals carrying the genes for AM, NH, OS and MA. Click here for more information on Geneprob reports.

Genetic Defect Policy
As of January 1, 2010 calves that have known carriers of a genetic defect in the first two generations (parental and grandparental) of their pedigree, without an intervening free result, need to be tested free of the causative gene to be eligible for registration.

The Registry Department will send out an RFI (Request for Information) sheet on a calf that has a carrier within the first two generations. Please follow up with us to request a DNA kit for the genetic defect or to let us know if you do not wish to register the animal. A genetic defect test kit is $26 per defect. Testing is done using a hair sample through MMI Genomics Laboratory in the United States.

Members of the Canadian Angus Association are required to report abnormalities in their herds. Click here for instructions on reporting calf abnormalities.

Mannosidosis Hair Test Available
Mannosidosis testing is now available using hair samples—please complete the genetic defect test request form to have an animal tested for MA. More information on MA is available on our website or by contacting Kajal by email or at 1-888-571-3580.

Alberta Age Verification Incentive Program

Starting July 1, eligible Alberta cattle producers will be able to take advantage of the province's 3 year, $15 million incentive program when they purchase Angus tags. The Age Verification Incentive Program will provide a discount of up to $3 per age-verified animal, based on the number of animals a beef producer has, or plans to have, age verified from the previous year's calf crop. For anyone who has already purchased their tags this year, the government will reimburse them directly; a separate Producer Application form is required.

Alberta producers will be required to fill out and sign a program form and mail or fax it along with an Angus tag order form to the Association office. Forms will be available on our website starting June 30.

For further information, contact Cheryl (1-888-571-3580) or Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (310-FARM [3276]).

Showing Angus this Summer?

Save money and stress—make sure the animals you plan to show this summer are registered well in advance of the deadline. Animals must be registered to participate in Canadian Angus Association Gold Shows. Last-minute requests cannot always be accommodated, especially if the animal is randomly selected for a parentage spot test. Registering early also means you won't have to pay rush fees. Click here for the Gold Show schedule. Remember: the younger the calves are when you register, the cheaper it is to register them.

Did You Know?

  • Adjusted weights are now available in the online herdbook for registered animals.

European Angus Forum 2010

  • The Danish Aberdeen-Angus Association is hosting the European Angus Forum 2010 September 1–5. Visit their website for more information.

Collect Hair Samples for Parentage Testing Any Time

  • If you are handling your animals, collect a hair sample using the recommended collection process, and store it in a clean unused envelope, clearly labelled with the animal's tattoo. Collected samples can be stored in a cardboard box indefinitely. Do not freeze the samples; keep them dry and away from any moisture.

  • The animal's age doesn’t matter. You can collect hair samples from your newborn calves for future parentage testing needs.

  • Remember to always get the paperwork from us when you are DNA testing an animal at GenServe. Our paperwork should always accompany the hair sample.

Sponsor a Steak for a Returning Soldier

Do you operate a small-scale farm? Have your say!

The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council is researching the labour needs on farms with less than $100,000 in gross receipts. Applications Management Consulting has been contracted by the Council to conduct this research. This project is a follow-up to the work CAHRC completed in 2009 about recruitment and retention on larger farms. Your responses will be used to better understand employment needs of smaller farms and will ensure that operations across Canada are represented in the research.

Go to www.cahrc-ccrha.ca or call CAHRC at 1-866-430-7457 ext. 228 to complete the survey by phone. All respondents can enter for a chance to win $100.

The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) was created to address human resource issues facing agricultural businesses across Canada. CAHRC works with industry leaders, governments, and education stakeholders to research, develop and communicate solutions to the challenges in agriculture employment and skills development.

Attention HerdMaster Users

Hello HerdMaster Users,

If you haven't already done so it is time to get your 2010 calves registered. You have until July 15 to submit your electronic registration file through HerdMaster at a cost of $15 per 2010 animal regardless of age.

New for 2010 is that you must include a management group with your birth weight. If you did not do this when you entered your calves you can still select the management group by clicking on View/Edit, then Weights. Sort your weights by date by clicking on the word date in the date column. All your recent birth weights should be at the bottom. You can now select the management group.

Make sure you have a filter for your 2010 calves and that you have checked on show inactive animals on the animal list. Now create the registration report by clicking on Reports/Society Reports/Registration. Using your 2010 calves filter, select all animals. You will then have to create the report for each membership number you manage. So far so good.

Now it is important to remember:

  1. Check the notification report for errors and correct all errors detected.

  2. Remember that the notification report must be clear before submitting.

  3. Print out the each registration report and proof the report. Check for any errors. Recreate the registration report if necessary and then click on the email box. This will create an email in outlook with the file attached. Include any information you want to pass on to the registration staff including requests for DNA kits (include tattoo of animal). We have had some issues with Outlook not sending the email so it is my recommendation for you to delete the address herdmaster@cdnangus.ca and retype this same address in the TO: line.
Please note if you do not use Outlook as your email program, you can always save the registration file (click on the save icon at the bottom of the registration screen) and then create your own email and attached the
    file.

  4. You will receive an email (usually within a couple of days) that your file has been processed and there is an EPD.zip file in your download section of the Canadian Angus website. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SAVE, UNZIP, and IMPORT this file into your HerdMaster so that you keep your data up to date. This file will have your registration numbers.
