Fall 2009 EPDs Available

If you participate in the Canadian Angus Performance Program, the Fall 2009 National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) results are now available. Click here for more information on EPDs and how to use them effectively. Contact Kajal if you have any questions regarding your new data.

If you do not currently participate in CAPP and would like to evaluate your animals, EPDs are one of the best tools a producer can use. EPDs are also the best way to market your animals. To become a member of CAPP contact Kajal.

Attention Purebred Angus Breeders

Do you know your responsibilities as a breeder of purebred Angus cattle? Registered animals must be tattooed properly. Complaints about missing and improper tattoos are increasing. Some problems are only being discovered when the buyer sells the animal, so please check the ear tattoo of all animals you buy against the tattoo number on the registration certificate. Tattooing information can be found on pages 33–35 of your breeder handbook.

Please also transfer your animals promptly! Commercial producers require the completed transfer to buy Angus tags. Under the Animal Pedigree Act, you have six months from the date of sale to complete the transfer.

Are You Buying Angus Animals?

If you see a description such as “applied for” in a sale catalogue instead of a Canadian Angus Association registration number, the animal may not be registered and may not be eligible for registration. Proceed with caution when making your buying decision. There has been an increase in the number of problems encountered from buyers of such animals, and at times the registration certificates may be unobtainable or difficult to obtain.

HerdMaster Update

Hello HerdMaster users,

Remember that we can help you enter calves, submit registration forms, import EPD files to keep your data up to date, enter animal vaccinations, record movement out to pasture, and enter breeding information. All you have to do is give us a call for assistance.

Don't forget to check out our new website, www.herdmaster.ca for information on upcoming training and information sessions and for updated manuals.

Have you thought about integrating an electronic tag reader and perhaps a scale with your HerdMaster? We have been advised that each province is looking into funding for equipment and the software. Now is the time to be checking out how you can incorporate these herd management tools so you are ready to make application after the final details for funding have been released.

We had the chance to chat with many of you at the World Angus Forum. If you missed us there, you can email us or call us to talk about HerdMaster.
